LOGGING HOURS

COMBINED HOURS

Combined hours encompass lectures, technique practice, research, and focused study both on and off campus. These hours are cumulative and contribute to the total of required certificate hours. The cumulative nature of these hours means that every minute spent in lectures, honing technical skills, or conducting research adds up, ultimately contributing to the overall required hours for completion of Certificate program.

ON CAMPUS HOURS

Despite being primarily a virtual educational platform, Rennie Harris University offers a unique blend of learning experiences that include both online lectures and in-person intensives. Events such as the Winter, Spring, and Summer Cyphers are integral components of the curriculum and are classified as “On Campus” hours. This terminology reflects the immersive nature of these intensives, where students engage directly with instructors and peers in a dynamic setting that fosters collaboration and hands-on learning. By participating in these on-campus hours, students not only enhance their understanding of the material but also build valuable connections within the Rennie Harris University community. This innovative approach ensures that, regardless of the predominantly online format, students still receive a rich and interactive educational experience that mirrors traditional campus life.

OFF CAMPUS HOURS

Off-campus hours consist of approved classes, lectures, and research opportunities that are not directly affiliated with Rennie Harris University. These hours can encompass a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, lectures focused on ethnic cultures and studies, as well as Gender, Race, and Queer studies, among others. To ensure proper documentation, candidates are required to provide proof of their enrollment, which may include rosters or enrollment documents from the respective institutions. Furthermore, candidates have the option to participate in approved street dance technique classes that may be offered in their local area, across the nation, or even abroad, thereby enriching their educational experience. It is essential for both the candidates and Rennie Harris University to meticulously track attendance for these off-campus classes. To streamline this process, applicants must obtain a signature from a designated instructor to verify their participation and additionally submit a five-minute video showcasing their engagement in the attended class. This comprehensive approach not only helps maintain accountability but also enhances the candidate's learning journey as they explore diverse educational avenues beyond Rennie Harris University's curriculum.

FOCUS HOURS

Applicants have the opportunity to enhance their educational experience by completing additional hours of study that focus on a secondary dance style distinct from the foundational Hip-hop and House genres. This secondary style can include a variety of vibrant forms such as Jookin, Jitting, Litefeet, Vogue, Waacking, and others, allowing candidates to broaden their skill set and explore different aspects of street dance culture. However, it is important to note that all focus hours must receive prior approval and will be monitored for tracking purposes, similar to the requirements outlined for Off Campus Hours. Each candidate is limited to a maximum of 100 focus hours, ensuring a balanced approach to their studies. Furthermore, due to the specialized nature of this focused study, Rennie Harris University will only accept half of the total focus hours acquired to count toward the candidate's overall required hours for completion. This structure is designed to encourage depth in their training while maintaining the integrity of the program's core curriculum.

RESEARCH HOURS

Rennie Harris University is proud to be in partnership with the Rennie Harris American Street Dance Archive, an initiative dedicated to the comprehensive documentation and preservation of African Diasporic dance from the era of enslavement to the present day. This important project encompasses not only street dance but also includes indigenous dance practices and ethnic ceremonies, reflecting the rich tapestry of community practices among diverse ethnic groups. Engaging in this research provides candidates with a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the cultural significance and historical context of street dance, thereby enriching their understanding of its evolution and impact. Each candidate can earn up to 40 hours toward their required completion hours by serving as a researcher for the Archive, with these hours divided into two 20-hour sessions. While candidates have the option to complete both sessions consecutively, it is recommended that they take a break in between to avoid feeling overwhelmed and to allow for better assimilation of the knowledge gained. The flexibility in completing the second session at their convenience further supports a balanced approach to their research endeavors. Once candidates express their interest in becoming researchers, they will be contacted by the Archive’s Director, Angelina Labate, who will guide them through the process. This research opportunity not only contributes to the candidates' academic progress but also plays a vital role in preserving the legacy and cultural heritage of street dance, ensuring that these art forms continue to be recognized and celebrated in the broader narrative of dance history.
